Jambatan Darul Hana or Kuching Waterfront New bridge, Sarawak River

The Darul Hana Bridge in Kuching is the only pedestrian bridge that connects the North and South of Kuching at the moment. The idea to build the bridge was mooted in 2013 by the Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud when he was still the Chief Minister of Sarawak. The Darul Hana bridge is a beautiful pedestrian bridge, which opened in November 2017. The inhabitants of Kuching always had to cross the Sarawak river with a "bot tambang" or "water taxi". Now the population and also the tourists can cross over the bridge to make the crossing from the south to the north of Kuching. The bridge stands out because of its special shape. It is not a straight bridge, but an S-shaped pedestrian bridge, resembling a Yin and Yang sign. The bridge is 336 meters long and is supported by two cables that are 45 meters high and connected with two outward-facing steel pillars with hornbill wings.

Prior to its construction, the bridge sparked controversy with the Pak Tambang (the traditional boats used by villagers to cross the Sarawak river) expressing worry that the bridge would disrupt their daily commuter ridership.

About the ‘Darul Hana’ Name Meaning:

During the opening of the Darul Hana Bridge, the Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud explained that the name ‘Darul Hana’ means a place of peace and tranquillity, in Arabic.

His explanation, however, didn’t quell questions on why the bridge was given such an ‘Arabic’ name, especially since Kuching is known to be multiracial, and the bridge was seen as the symbol of unity by many.

Cost, Architecture & Specifications of the Darul Hana Bridge:

The Darul Hana S-Bridge cost RM35 million, the S-shape structural design was inspired by the meandering rivers of Sarawak.

The 336m Darul Hana bridge measures 3.25m in width and loom 12 meters above the water. Supporting the Darul Hana Bridge is two cables that are 45 metres high from two 48-degree outward angled steel towers topped out with stylised hornbills, denoting the emblem of Sarawak.

Audience and Visitor Reviews and Feedback:

A very well built bridge for the pedestrian. See the whole city from the top of the bridge. Sarawak River with the city line is the breathtaking view. Very entertaining at night (lights n etc). Nice addition to the do existing attraction. Now you can cross towards the other side of the waterfront, on foot. not recommended for small children under 12 though, the railing is not as safe, would suggest a full glass wall instead. free admission. just like your common suspension bridge, it feels shaky on windy days It makes people easier to cross the river. But if walk with your children, make sure you look after them and hold their hands, parents. 😘 The beautiful bridge located at Waterfront Kuching. One of the tourist spot and crowded places. The bridge can change colours and that makes it looks attractive. However, the parent should be careful when bringing kids here because the bridge shaking sometimes since it is hanging and got uncovered holes where the lamp located.
